This isn't intentional, mind; it's just the way it comes out, and I'm rather grateful for that. I can't stand it when composers (or artists more generally) basically make the same piece over and over again. I don't think it's beautiful or elegant or humble—I think it's boring and a bit self-indulgent. I like lots of things, all at once. (How could anyone not?) During my PhD, I taught composition at Leeds with Scott and the Id-Meister General, Martin Iddon. Something really useful that they taught me that I still use with my students today is to imagine two canons of musical work—the music that you’ve learned about at school, college, or university, and the music that you like or are engaged with outside of that—and the ways in which they might collide to make music that is, for better or worse, only music that you might make (or like). From there, if you’re willing to indulge what might seem like a silly idea at first, then it’s relatively straightforward to plan some unusual music. So, for example, the second track of Mutism, ‘We are like ships in the dark (I fucking hate you)’, is, to my ears, a meeting of Cocteau Twins and Laure Hiendl, with the title referencing Blackhaine.
